Selv om sjøtransport er en effektiv måte å frakte varer og mennesker på er næringen også en stor bidragsyter til klimagassutslipp, og må gjennom en omfattende transformasjon om sektoren skal bidra til å nå utslippsmålene i årene som kommer.

TØI forsker på problemstillinger knyttet til overgang til nye energibærere som vil endre kostnadsstrukturen, men også innebære endringer i organisering av seilingsruter og distribusjon av ulike energibærere.

Andre problemstillinger spenner fra økonomiske analyser til framskrivinger og nettverksanalyser av transportytelser ved bruk av en nasjonal godsmodell, som dekker alle landets innenriks- og utenrikstransporter.
