Sammendrag

Public transport is perceived as safer than private transport, but the perceptions are influenced by recent accidents and the amount of media coverage. Motorcycles are perceived as the most unsafe mode of travel, before cycling and walking. Car driving is perceived as more safe, but not as safe as public transport by air, rail, road and sea. In general men perceive transport to be more safe than women do, and young people in general perceive transport to be safer than elderly people do, with certain exceptions. Those with a motor cycle driving licence perceive motor cycle driving as safer than those without a driving license. Among those with a driving license for car, the majority feels it is more safe to be behind the wheel than to be passenger.
