In this report based on the Norwegian National Travel Survey from 2009 (NTS 2009), we study how trips are made up of different modes of transport and are linked together in chains, most of which are simple, with only two trips. In analysing chains, we see that 48 percent of car-driver trips of one kilometre or less are part of chains longer than five kilometres and thus cannot readily be replaced by walking or cycling. Women have the most complex travel patterns, even among those who do not have children.
