The ambitions about environmentally and climate friendly transport are high in Norway. Our analysis show that Electric buses are most likely to be the most cost effective solution for urban bus transport towards 2025. Fast charging at the end stops is an investment that will pay off with a future full electrification of the urban bus transport in Norway. Biofuels to diesel engines will together with bio-methane, be renewable fuels that are suited for bus transport on suburban and longer bus routes. Biofuels must however comply with the EU renewable directive and its complex and increasingly demanding sustainability criteria. So called Advanced Biofuels are not yet produced in Norway. Economically competitive production in sufficient quantities are challenges related to biofuel availability.
