The Norwegian Public Roads Administration conducted a project in Dyvekes vei to enhance cyclists' safety and comfort. The project involved a 400-meter section where the bike lane was expanded from ca. 1.3 to 2.25 meters. This was achieved by removing the bus lane and adding a 90 cm buffer against the driving lane. The aim was to assess the impact of this change on traffic patterns, safety, and user satisfaction among cyclists, pedestrians, public transport, and motorists. The study included literature searches, video observations, and interviews with cyclists, pedestrians, and bus drivers. The results generally showed improved safety and comfort for cyclists and pedestrians, and a reduction in near-accidents reported by bus drivers. The initiative also led to fewer speeding violations and increased distance between vehicles and cyclists, demonstrating that bike lanes with buffers can enhance traffic safety on midblock sections in urban areas, though success depends on multiple factors like road design, local traffic conditions, and intersection design.
