The Machine Learning and Data Science research group has an overarching goal to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and particularly machine learning (ML) to transform the way we collect, analyse, and interpret large amounts of data. One of the group's main tasks is to develop ML algorithms and models to analyse complex and often unstructured data sources. Through efficient data processing, the group strives to recognize patterns, extract insights, and predict future trends or behaviours. The group is also involved in the development and use of advanced modelling and simulation techniques to simulate, visualize, and understand the effects of different measures or scenarios. In an ongoing project, [PRELONG, 2021-2026], machine learning is used to generate transportation demand for a traffic simulation tool. Another purpose of the project is to build an AI tool that can predict traffic jams and bottlenecks in the road network in a faster and more user-friendly way than current transportation models. The group emphasizes ethical and scientifically sound use of machine learning and AI. This includes, among other things, taking into account privacy and data security, and ensuring that the results are accurate, reliable, and reproducible. The group also seeks to promote general competence building and improve the understandability of what is often regarded as 'black box' models. The research group was established in June 2023 and aims to be at the forefront of the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence and data analysis. The goal is to develop methods and technologies that will shape the digital landscape for transportation research in the future, both in Norway and internationally.
