The report contains estimates of freight transport by sea related to fish farming. The research has been motivated by the hypothesis that freight transport related to fish farming is underestimated in transport statistics published by the Institute of Transport Economics in close cooperation with Statistics Norway. The volume of freight transport by sea generated by fish farming activities is estimated to around 5.3 percent of the total freight transport in Norwegian waters. A substantial share of this freight transport is not reported in the official transport statistics. The discrepancy between the estimated numbers presented in this report and official statistics is estimated to around 1.6 million tons.
