A traffic safety indicator based on six component indicators in road traffic is being developed. There are two indicators for the use of seat belts, two retated to hours of service and rest, one for brakes on heavy vehicles, and one for the amount and quality of driver training. The indicator can be used both at the regional and national level in planning and evaluation of traffic safety efforts. The indicator is measured on a scale from 0 to 6. The input is the annual estimated component indicator values. The principle behind the indicator is that each component indicator is given a weight according to the significance it has on the number of killed or severely injured traffic victims.
