The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has received a request from the Norwegian Truck Owners Association (NLF) to increase the permitted gross weights of trucks with and without trailer unit. With this, NLF wants more efficiently utilization of vehicle equipment and achieve: reduced greenhouse gas emissions per performed tonne-kilometre, reduced number of trucks on the road and increased traffic safety, and the least possible negative impact on infrastructure. TØI has analyzed the effects in a systems perspective of how increased gross weight for some vehicle combinations affects transport costs, traffic work, mode split, road tear and wear, greenhouse gas emissions and other externalities. The societal benefit of the measure is calculated from 2023 until 2030. This results in a positive net total discounted benefit, of which the savings in transport costs make up the majority of the benefit.
