About half of the pupils in lower secondary school in Viken walk or bike to school in the summer term. About a third use public transport, and a few (7%) are driven fewer are cycling to school, and more are using public transport or are being driven. Pupils in upper secondary school use public transport more often, and walk or bike less, compared to pupils in lower secondary school. Despite many walking and biking, the goal of having 80% of those not eligible for school transport walk or bike is still far off. Distance to school affects how pupils travel to school; pupils in upper secondary school have longer commutes. This explains much of the difference in transportation modes. Most young people in Viken perceive their school route as safe regarding traffic. Whether the school route is perceived as safe or not has little impact on how one travels to school.
