HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) has the advantage that it can be blended into fossil diesel in various proportions and that the existing infrastructure for fossil diesel can be used.
The climate impact of HVO will depend on the type of raw materials used to produce the fuel, and where the raw materials are produced. At worst, HVO can have a higher climate contribution than conventional diesel.
For heavy Euro IV vehicles, it is the exhaust after treatment system that determine the emission level of NOx and PM. It is expected that the emission will be in line with that of fossil diesel from the Euro IV engine.
