The Norwegian second homes web survey was carried out in the autumn of 2008, based on a nationwide representative sample of 3 000 domestic second home owners. Private second homes in Norway are used 40 nights per year on average, corresponding to 114 guest nights. Total expenditures on the last visit were about NOK 3 100, which equals NOK 950 per person and NOK 178 per guest night. There are considerable geographical variations in expenditures by type of location, purpose of visit, and length of stay, as well as by socio-economic characteristics of the second home users. On average, annual expenses per unit constitute NOK 15 280 spent during visits, NOK 18 800 in fixed costs, and NOK 25 000 spent on remodeling and expansions. For Norway, total expenditures related to second homes are calculated to NOK 21.3 billion. Close to 30 million guest nights were spent at private Norwegian second homes in 2008.
