Forecasting the future

Forecasting has many faces, the common challenge of each being to develop an understanding of underlying mechanisms and causal relationships, which in turn imply a strong focus on behavioral relevance. Concepts, conceptual content and situation specific approaches are discussed in the context of explanatory variables and their explanatory power, the distinction between descriptive and predictive models and conditional forecasts.
