The municipality of Voss is a mountain resort area for winter tourism as well as a well-known venue for various festivals and sports/recreational events. It is also a stop-over location for bus groups and cars en route between Bergen and Oslo and the fjords. There was an estimated 1.1 million guest-nights in Voss in 2007, of which 456,000 in commercial beds. Tourism generated an estimated turnover of NOK 711 million (excl. VAT) in Voss in 2007. The direct and indirect tourism-based gross production value is estimated to NOK 625 million. 1160 jobs, of a total of 6342 within the municipality (18%), are estimated to be directly or indirectly related to tourism. Non-residential seasonal workers are not included in these figures. In addition, tourism-generated activity in Voss includes a comprehensive development of second homes/vacation units. Annual local incomes from real estate sales, construction services, property sales profit, etc. related to new second homes are estimated to be NOK 350 mill. in Voss, of which NOK 240 mill. are retained locally.
