The purpose of this project has been to acquire a better knowledge about costs and efficiency in Norwegian ports. The method has been to com-pare costs in different ports, and supplement this comparison with in-depth interviews. There are significant cost differences between different kinds of goods. From 2/3 to 3/4 of the cargo-dependent costs are paid by the transport pur-chaser. Eastern Norwegian ports have considera-bly lower cargo-dependent costs than ports in Western Norway in particular because of the traffic pattern on the west coast. The "main ports" have higher cargo-dependent costs than the other ports.
