Better Public Transport - Documentation and Testing of the Stated Preference Method

The purpose of the project is to estimate the passengers’ willingness to pay for different service improvements. We have used Stated Choice techniques to analyse the preferences of regular public transport users in Oslo. The analysis is based on 644 interviews. The results of the study are presented in TØI report 167/1993 «Better public transport». This report is testing the Stated Preferences design for the survey, the consistence of the answers and connection between preferences and mode choice for the public transport passengers. Based on the tests we will conclude that the method is well suited for the estimation of passengers’ preferences and that the interviewees managed the complicated choice situation. However, tests clarified the importance of balanced design and segmentation of the sample to reduce possible estimation bias.
