Use of highly automated vehicles for last mile distribution is an exciting development that could help meet several societal challenges. The report describes different types of vehicles for land-based urban goods delivery and finds that they can help achieve goals that are important for logistics actors and society. It describes the pros and cons of using automated vehicles for delivering goods. Limitations of current vehicle technology and goods delivery systems means there are still relatively few realizable use areas today. We describe what the Norwegian Public Roads Authority and other public actors can do to help ensure that automated vehicles are implemented in line with societal values and goals.
