Travel Survey of National Road Ferry Services

Informasjon på norsk | Information in English

About the Project

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration needs more knowledge about the use of ferries on Norway’s national roads in order to contribute to the best possible ferry services for users. National road ferries are an important part of the transport system in many parts of Norway, both along the coast and in fjord regions. The aim of the survey is to update knowledge about who uses the ferries, what kinds of journeys are made, and the role ferries play in people's daily lives and leisure travel.

On behalf of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Institute of Transport Economics (TØI), in collaboration with Norstat, is therefore conducting a survey among users of these ferry services.

The survey is being conducted on 16 national road ferry services in different parts of the country. Together, these ferry services provide a broad picture of how national road ferries are used in Norway. The questionnaire includes questions about why and how you travel, where your journeys start and end, how long you had to wait, and how satisfied you are with the ferry journey. In addition, the survey includes some questions about you, such as your age, gender, employment status, income and education. The results of the survey will be used in reports and analyses. Results will only be presented for groups of travellers, and it will not be possible to identify individual participants.

How can you participate?

Anyone travelling on one of the national road ferry services included in the survey between June and October 2026 will find information about the survey on board. The questionnaire is available in Norwegian, English, German and Polish and can be completed digitally using a mobile phone or another digital device by scanning QR codes displayed on the ferries. On many departures, interviewers from Norstat will also be present to provide information about the survey and assist travellers who wish to participate.

Participants will be entered into a draw to win one gift card worth NOK 10,000 and five gift cards worth NOK 2,000. Winners residing outside Norway will receive the gift cards in their local currency. Participation in the survey is voluntary.
