On the basis of 11000 respondents drawn from the 1999/2000 Norwegian survey of household consumption and media use, the populations use of different transport modes are analysed as part of a transport related lifestyle. Nine transport profiles are defined that characterises the respondents’ use of different modes of transport. As many as 37% of the respondents belonged to one of the profiles characterised by the use of several transport modes. By analysing the number and type of leisure trips undertaken by a respondent, their transport profile and transport related activities, nine lifestyle segments are defined. The demographic composition of each of these transport related lifestyle segments are also described. Viewing the choice of transport mode and the resulting transport profiles as part of a transport related lifestyle provides the authorities with an additional perspective on how to understand and influence the populations choice of transport modes.
