Tourism and female labour in a regional perspective

Authors: Viggo Jean-Hansen
Report nr: 357/1997
ISBN: 82-480-0009-5
Language: Norwegian

In this project Norway is divided into 28 regions where both the value added and the employment by gender in tourism is calculated. The employment by women in tourism is high measured pr NOK value added. In rural regions where tourism is an important economic activity, the number of jobs supplied by tourism is substantial. In the report data for moves by region for both men and women are also analysed in order to see how actual moves coincide with women’s job opportunities in tourism. Among women less moves are found from and more moves to regions which have a higher activity in tourism. In the mountainous regions in the southern part of Norway with both winter and summer tourism, we find the highest employment by women in tourism.
