Time disutilities on ferry trips

We have investigated how well the transport models RTM and NTM together predict traffic on a selection of ferry connections given different assumptions about the disutilities related to travel time and waiting time. Our tested changes in assumptions imply reduced waiting time disadvantage for low-frequency connections and lower weighting of travel time on board the ferry. We find that these changes result in increased predicted traffic and thus better correspondence with actual traffic for some connections, but that the impact for most connections is quite small. In general, the models are more accurate for the largest connections. Based on an overall assessment of these findings and results from other studies, we provide updated recommendations on how to handle time disutilities in transport analyses and benefit calculations of transport system improvements.
