Norway is a long, sparsely populated, and topographically challenging country on the periphery of Europe. This report examines the economic and social impacts of aviation in Norway. The economic effects of aviation are described and quantified as the direct, indirect, and induced effects of airport activity, as well as the broader net effects on GDP and employment from connectivity. Business dependence on aviation is highlighted through qualitative interviews, document reviews, and a survey of firms in selected case areas. The catalytic effects of aviation are analyzed for four areas: the energy sector, air cargo, inbound tourism, and the labor- and housing markets; the report also considers aviation’s role in supporting a decentralized system for higher education, its importance for cultural and sporting events, and its contribution to health, safety, and emergency preparedness. Economic benefits are illustrated with an NTM6-based calculation of a hypothetical scenario without a national air network.
