A runway extension at Sandnessjøen airport will allow direct flights to Oslo with larger aircrafts and increase competition for PSO-routes. The resulting loss for the national air service provider, Avinor, may well be compensated by cheaper PSO-tenders. Passenger traffic in the area is expanding fast because of oil and gas exploration, and local business leaders believe that direct flights to Oslo will increase travel and investments in the area.
