The risk of getting caught when committing a traffic law violation is very low – in the range of 1-60 per million kilometres driven while committing a violation. This estimate refers to speeding, impaired driving, non-use of seat belts, using a handheld cell phone and violating regulations of hours of service and rest. Except for speeding, the risk of apprehension for traffic law violations has declined in recent years. Several cost-effective measures can be taken to increase the risk of apprehension and reduce the number of accidents and injuries attributable to traffic law violations.
