Accidents involving bicycles, e-scooters, and pedestrians are significantly underreported in official statistics. The Institute of Transport Economics (TØI) has developed a system where patients self-report accidents when seeking medical help. The registration is done through a digital questionnaire with map and street view features, providing detailed insights into accident locations, mechanisms, and context. The system is used in the research projects ReCyCLIST and CyWalk across several Norwegian cities. The collected data supports municipalities and counties in implementing targeted traffic safety measures and has revealed previously unknown risk factors. Although not all accidents are captured, the method offers far better coverage than official data based on police reports. Legally, the projects are organized outside the Health Research Act, with voluntary and anonymous participation. This provides flexibility and makes the system easier to implement at the local level.
