Perceived travel times in 2024 : How is the competitive dynamic between cars and public transportation experienced in Norwegian cities?

This report follows up on a 2019 report comparing perceived/generalized travel times by car and public transport in 13 urban areas. We calculate new travel time ratios for 2024 and examine changes. In most places, public transport has worsened in the new calculations. The report further examines the relationship between perceived travel time ratios and toll charges in urban areas. In several areas on the outskirts of the urban regions, public transport is almost an attractive alternative while toll charges encourage less car use. Additionally, the report discusses which public transport measures will have the greatest effect on perceived travel time by public transport. Reducing transfers and increasing the number of departures can have an impact. Finally, we look at what the restriction of Ring 3 at Nydalen and the ban on electric cars in bus lanes in Oslo and Akershus have meant for car travel times in Oslo. Travel times generally increased compared to typical travel times.
