In the autumn of 2024, TØI conducted a survey among individuals aged 75 and older in the municipalities of Bømlo, Kvinnherad, and Sveio to examine travel habits, mobility needs, and attitudes towards on-demand transport. The results show that activity levels decline with age as physical challenges related to transport increase. Over half of the respondents reported a desire to participate more frequently in various activities, but face barriers such as health issues, long distances, and transport difficulties. Walking and private cars are the most commonly used modes of transport. Few use regular public transport. Challenges related to use of public transport are poor accessibility and lack of service. Attitudes towards on-demand transport are generally positive. A significant proportion state they are likely to use such a service—particularly those with transport limitations. The study reveals a clear unmet mobility need, and on-demand transport appears to be a potentially important measure for enhancing mobility, independence and wellbeing in rural areas.
