Relocation and long distant commuting can be considered as central elements in individuals and households “mobility strategies”. The report reviews the long distant commuting as a mobility strategy in Norway in the period 1999-2006, based on the national survey of housing and migration from 2008. Focus for the study is people who have started long distant commuting due to household relocation. The results show significant variations in motives for relocation and housing, related to education, gender, age and place of residence. For people who have started long distant commuting due to relocation, family-related motives were particularly important, while for the permanent long distant commutes motives related to local environment was central.
