This report provides input for the Norwegian Railway Directorate's work on a new long-distance train strategy. The purpose is to assess the potential for transferring traffic on major relations, from air to rail for endpoint journeys, and from car to rail in intermediate markets. Analyses are based on data from national travel surveys as well as other studies conducted by TØI. Overall, the transfer potential is considered significant. The potential for transfer is greater for leisure travel than for business travel. The likelihood of considering trains as an alternative to air travel is generally negatively correlated with age and income. Women generally show a greater tendency to replace air travel with train travel. The results highlight that accessibility, travel time, and price are crucial factors for realizing the train’s potential in the market for long-distance travel. In terms of shifting traffic from car to public transport in the intermediate market, facilitation for luggage handling is also an important aspect.
