This report presents the results of the Norwegian foreign visitor survey 2003, including data for the summer season (May–September) 2003. In the year 2003 a total of 3.15 million foreign guests stayed overnight in Norway, while 1.15 million were on a day trip from abroad. Foreign tourists spent a total of 21.3 million guest-nights in Norway in 2003, of which holiday guests constituted 18.3 million guest-nights. Business travel and day trips from abroad showed a considerable decrease in 2003. On the contrary, there has been a slight increase in the number of holiday guests, especially those travelling by air. The most important source market for overnight stays is Germany, followed by Sweden, Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands and the USA. The visitors during the summer period mainly use four types of accomodation, namely hotels etc. (27 per cent), overnight stays by friends and relatives (20 per cent), camping on camp sites (18 per cent) and rented cabins (17 per cent).
