Environmental impacts of a possible location of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics to Tromsø

The paper evaluates how environmental aspects of possible Olympic Games in Tromsø 2018 are presented in the application. The applicant Tromsø 2018 AS deserves credit for the strong environmental ambitions stated. In spite of a formulation of Zero irreversible encroachments upon areas appointed as worthy of protection, the application contains no concrete analyses of what encroachments to the natural and cultural landscape are represented by the construction of the buildings and facilities. The application also hardly touches the topic of whether the constructions can be used in an effective way after the games. Environmental consequences of the visitors’ transportation to and from Tromsø is also a topic hardly touched upon, in spite of the fact that location of Olympic games in Tromsø will imply considerable more air travel than what would be the case for the other possible locations in Norway.
