Sammendrag

The Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue (NSSR) has 38 rescue vessels operating all over the Norwegian coastline. In this report, we have computed the social benefits from the operation of this fleet. The benefits consists of three elements; 1) Lives saved, whether they are in a ship or not, 2) Ships rescued from sinking 3) Avoiding chemical pollution from ship accidents and disasters. The social benefits are close to 4 times the costs of operating and manning the vessels, including the administrative costs (the costs of the land based activity).
