The report describes a proposal for a strategic operational concept for the public transport system in the Trondheim region in Norway in 2020. The aim is to increase the market share of public transport by simplifying the use of public transport for all citizens. The concept proposes a network created by a few strengthened, high-frequency lines, both in the city of Trondheim and in the surrounding region. The basic regional network consists of an upgraded local railway line and two express bus lines, all to be operated as pendulum lines on a fixed-minute schedule. They cater for the longer journeys in the region by fast connections between the major destinations, including Trondheim City and Værnes Airport. In Trondheim five major bus lines are proposed to be upgraded to the standards of BRT – Bus rapid transit, thus requiring a significant improvement of the existing unstable operations of buses in central parts of the city. Coordinated with the major lines at major hubs, a system of local lines should serve the areas outside walking distance of the main system. Integrated, flexible and demand-responsive services are envisaged to cater for rural and low density urban areas with too little demand for scheduled services of at least one departure per hour. Also social transport services for citizens who cannot cater for their own transport should be integrated in this last part of the integrated public transport system. The report is only available in electronic format.
