In this report, we review current transport models and alternative models in terms of their suitability for projecting transport demand under different assumptions about the future than traditional baseline trends and assumptions. The report also contains a practical review of methods for foresight methodology and backcasting in the transport sector. It also reviews how certain developments (e.g., more electrification) are expected to affect the transport sector and how to model it. The purpose of this review is to provide input on how to assess the various model and tools of analysis that can be used in projections and backcasting processes to achieve politically set goals, e.g. the 2050 climate targets.
