This report provides a state-of-the-art review of existing relevant studies concerning factors influencing residents’ energy needs for transport, and housing and location preferences among households. The report provides an overview of factors that should be considered when explaining travel behaviour and investigating the effects of dwelling types and residential patterns on travel mode choice and travelled distances. The evaluation from preferences for house type and location changes investigates the mobility patterns and the trade-off between settling in larger housing farther from the city centre and settling centrally in a smaller or more expensive dwelling. This report is the partial outcome of a state-of-the-art review performed under the research project EE Settlement which is financed by The Research Council of Norway within the Byforsk programme.
