Institute of Transport Economics has moved to Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research – CIENS

Since October 2006, the Institute of Transport Economics has been part of the Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research – CIENS for short. Being located next to the main campus of the University of Oslo, the centre consists of eight legally independent research institutes with a combined staff of about 500 persons.

The main idea of CIENS is to encourage integration along two essential dimensions: between basic and applied research, and between natural and social science and their various disciplines.

The aim of CIENS is to help solve the substantial and complex challenges arising in the interface between environment, business, and politics.

The CIENS partners have developed a common research platform – called Strategies and Actions for Common Research (SACRE) – based on the Drivers-Pressures-State-Impacts-Response (DPSIR) approach. This platform identifies six particularly important areas of research:

  • Climate Change
  • Sustainable Atmosphere
  • Integrated River Basin and Coastal Zone Management
  • Urban Sustainability
  • Sustainable Mobility
  • Ecosystem Products and Services
