The department offers expertise in the field of passenger transport, travel behaviour, tourism and regional analysis.

Local and urban passenger transport is one main focus of the department. Important research topics are: demand and supply analyses of local passenger transport; evaluation of public transport measures; development of effective policy instruments; the development of institutional organisation and financial instruments in order to promote efficient urban passenger transport; and the development of cost-efficient data gathering methods for passenger transport surveys.

The department also study social conditions for travel activity and mobility, develop theories and improve methods for collecting data about travel behaviour.

Tourism research has been a key area at the Institute since the end of the 1960s. The compilation of tourism statistics, foreign visitor surveys and in-depth studies of tourism in Norway are major activities. Tourism development studies and trend investigations are included in such customer-oriented research.
