Sammendrag

We have compared the recommendations in the Norwegian handbooks 017 (road design) and 233 (bicycle handbook) to the handbooks of 10 other countries. The aim has been to assess the various solutions chosen for bicyclists and pedestrians, suggesting suitable types of design in different situations. The review shows that the Norwegian requirements in many cases are consistent with the international recommendations. However, we find that the Norwegian threshold for use of separate facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at the speed limit of 30-50 km/h is significantly higher than international recommendations. The threshold should be reduced if Norway wants to follow the international standard. Surprisingly, the recommendations for when to separate cyclists and pedestrians from one another are more ambitious and specific in the Norwegian handbook 017 than in the foreign handbooks.
